Uniforms are a strong element in empowering an identity and encouraging a feeling of belonging to a group. It is a visual, physical, immediate and clear statement. As a child in communist Yugoslavia, on the first day of school and on important holidays we would wear red scarves and navy blue hats with red stars called Titovka. We were pioneers — Tito’s young communists — and most of us didn’t even know what it really meant.
When Yugoslavia started falling apart, it became shameful to be a communist. We were all ashamed of our past, of each other and we rushed into re-creating our identities. My fascination with uniforms remained and I study them and use them in my work.
